A DOT Physical is required for people who drive commercial vehicles
This is to make sure that drivers are physically, mentally and emotionally fit
the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires this testing for public safety
You will need a DOT Physical if you:
- Are paid to drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 8 people
- Drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 15 people
- Carry hazardous material in your vehicle that requires your vehicle to have a placard
- Drive a vehicle on the interstate with a gross combination weight rating of 10,000 pounds (5 tons) or more

Your physical exam will include :

- A vision test
- A hearing test
- Blood pressure and pulse checks
- Urine test
- General physical examination
Once you pass your physical, you will receive a Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) - which is the DOT medical card. This will be good for 2 years
